Archbishop Villegas sees Death Penalty as not the solution to crimes!
The reinstitution of Death Penalty in the Philippines has always been one of the topics that have sparked lots of debates even in the usual discussions of people. Like the coin having two sides, there are those who are into it while there are those who strongly disagree with it.
While curbing the crime is one of the topmost reasons of the affirmative side, the negative side strongly stand for the sake of morality and the idea that the Philippines is a Christian country.

Based on a previous news report, Senator Risa Hontiveros and other lawmakers hope to invalidate the proposal of reviving Death Penalty in the country.
Recently, a news report in GMA News Online entailed the view of Archbishop Socrates Villegas, the President of CBCP, on Death Penalty.
Archbishop Villegas sees it as not the solution to stop the criminality in the country from increasing. He expressed other factors that should be considered.
“Cleanse the police ranks! Fix all the courts… Death penalty is a lazy form of penalty instead of helping reform those who made mistakes,” says the CBCP President as he was quoted speaking in a news report of Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines.

He also stressed the tightening of the security in the New Bilibid prison. According to him, overhauling the system of justice in the country is more practicable than reviving Death Penalty in the Philippines.
Archbishop Villegas also pointed out that the Death Penalty will make the less fortunate ones suffer even more and the rich ones escape from charges in a justice system that is weak.
The Archbishop said that the proposal is not the solution. He said that the alternative is ‘fullness of life’ for the poor, rich, guilty, innocent, saints, and sinners.
