Miriam: Marcos declared martial law to help Filipinos and the country

MANILA, Philippines – Answering critics who denounced her for choosing the son of the late strongman for her running mate, presidential candidate Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago said she believes President Ferdinand Marcos only declared martial law to benefit the Filipino people and the country.

“What they were doing were, in their ideas, the best interest of the Filipino people,” she told InterAksyon.

The feisty senator also admitted she was one of those who initially welcomed martial law.

“I was one of the people who did not mind the imposition of martial law at first,” she said.

However, Santiago added she became dismayed over Marcos’ failed experiment.

“In the first few years, there was much more order in the streets, but eventually I think that martial law did not proceed as intended,” she said.

She also stood by her decision as a trial judge under his administration to free 50 protesters who were placed under a preventive detention action order — basically a warrantless arrest without the benefit of bail.
“The truth will always be the truth, justice will always be truth,” she pointed out.

Nevertheless, Santiago said she does mind if the long-dead dictator whose remains have been frozen in his family mausoleum in Ilocos Norte would be transferred and buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig.

“My own father is buried in the Libingan ng mga Bayani. He was a guerrilla captain,” she said. “Why should we allow a dead man to control the actuation of the living and its new millennial generation? We should let go of the past.”
