The camp of Vice President Leni Robredo has confirmed she was in the United States as Typhoon Nina battered the Bicol region, including her hometown, Naga City, on Christmas Day.

Robredo’s spokesperson, Georgina Hernandez said Robredo flew to the US for a family reunion.

“The Vice President travelled for a family reunion to the United States for the break, which was planned more than a year ago. She will be going home to Naga as soon as she arrives,” Hernandez said in a statement released Monday (Dec. 26).

While Robredo is in the US, her camp said she has been busy directing the Office of the Vice President to work with various local governments and non-government organizations in providing aid for typhoon victims, such as donations and the setup of local relief centers.

“Furthermore, the Vice President has been in constant communication with her team since Friday. She has also deployed a team in Bicol to assist local relief operations,” Hernandez said.

Some netizens have questioned Robredo’s whereabouts since the typhoon, which first made landfall in Catanduanes on Christmas Day, particularly affected Bicol region.

Despite Robredo’s faith in Bicolanos’ resilience, her spokesperson said the Vice President still urges the public to help out typhoon victims in any way they can.

“In the spirit of Christmas, let us give hope to many of our brothers and sisters and enable them to bounce back faster from this latest trial in their lives,” Hernandez said.
