Aquino, 6 others face complaints over alleged shipment of gold bars

Former President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III and six other officials faced graft and plunder complaints for the alleged shipment of $141 billion in gold to Thailand.

Also facing the charges are former Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, defeated Presidential candidate Mar Roxas, former Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima, Treasury Department chief dealer Lorelei Fernandez, Sen. Franklin Drilon and Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Amando Tetangco Jr.

The case was filed by Rogelio Cantoria, who claimed to have worked at the BSP from 1976 to 1995, and lawyer Fernando Perito.

The complaint filed before the Office of the Ombudsman was based on a purported BSP circular that was first seen on social media last year.

According to the alleged BSP circular, an estimated of 3,500 metric tons of gold was shipped and deposited at the Bank of Thailand.

The circular was allegely signed by Aquino, De Lima, Roxas, Tetangco, Drilon and Purisima.

According to the complainants, the gold bars could be retrieved and returned to the BSP if those were properly and legally processed.

Meanwhile, the officials who were allegedly linked in the gold transfer has not yet issued any statement about the case filed against them.
