Drilon: "Why blame media? Duterte should shut up about martial law to avoid panic"

Senate President Pro Tempore Franklin Drilon defended the media after Communications Secretary Martin Andanar slammed them for "misreporting" the remarks of President Rodrigo Duterte about martial law.

“The reports were based on the President’s speech and the statements were quoted verbatim. We should not blame the press for reporting what the President said,” Drilon said in a statement.

Drilon also advised Andanar and his team to be more cautious in discussing the issue in public.

“The truth is, mere talk of martial law is enough to send chills to the spine of any Filipino. Therefore, it is something that should not be taken lightly,” he said.

“We call on the administration to exercise prudence in making public statements that are very disturbing and could create undue fear and tension in the country,” Drilon added.

In a speech of Duterte on Saturday, he said no one– not even the Supreme Court– could stop him from declaring Martial Law if he has to.

Andanar, however, said the media “misreported” the President’s remark. “Such headlines sow panic and confusion to many,” Andanar said in a statement.

“We consider this kind of reportage as the height of journalistic irresponsibility,” Andanar added.
