LOOK: PM Abe's wife visits Japanese cemetery in Davao!

(UPDATED) The wife of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited Friday a cemetery in Davao City to pay her respects to the remains of her countrymen who settled in the Philippines prior to the Second World War.

Akie Abe was accompanied by Honeylet Avanceña, President Rodrigo Duterte’s common-law wife, during her visit to the cemetery in Barangay Mintal.

After going around the cemetery, Avanceña thanked the Japanese government in behalf of Duterte.

"The President is very grateful for the help that the Japanese government, through Prime Minister Abe and Madame Akie Abe, are extending to us Filipinos and our country," Avanceña said.

Yesterday, Akie went to the Philippines' premier government-run school for the blind.

Akie is with her husband on a two-day visit to the Philippines. Their arrival marks several firsts—Abe is the first government head to come to the country during Duterte’s term, and is also the highest-ranking leader to visit Davao City so far.

Abe is also possibly blazing a trail for diplomacy, being the first leader to attend a breakfast meeting at Duterte's family home in Matina.

Known for being a trailblazer by veering away from the traditional persona of a quietly supportive first lady, she is seen as her conservative husband’s liberal counterbalance, even voicing opposition to some of his political views.

She is also vocal in supporting marginalized sectors, including the LGBT community.
