Biggest ambulance ship arrived in the Philippines for the PRC
The M/V Susitna, Philippine Red Cross’ (PRC) ambulance vessel from Alaska’s Matanuska-Susitna Borough just arrived on Friday in at Subic Bay Freeport Zone.
The ship will serve as the biggest ambulance and disaster response sea vessel in the country.
The M/V Susitna is a 195-foot refurbished military prototype vessel.

It was acquired by the Philippine Red Cross for $1.75 million, far from Matsunaka-Susitna Borough's original price of $800 million dollars.
The acquisition of the ambulance ship was made through the effort of the Philippine Red Cross chairman and Sen. Richard Gordon who noted earlier that there's a necessity for a ship after the experience of the Red Cross during the onslaught of super typhoon Yolanda.
The newly-acquired vessel of the Philippine Red Cross will serve as emergency units, fast transport and landing vessel, relief supply transport ship, hospital ship, medical facility deployment ship, sea rescue vessel, mass evacuation vessel, humanitarian logistics ship, mobile operations command post and humanitarian education and training ship.

During the arrival of M/Susitna at Subic Bay on December 2, 2016, Sen. Richard Gordon noted that the ship will serve as multi-purpose vessel for emergency units' fast transport and landing, relief supply transport, sea rescue, mobile operations command post and also for humanitarian education and training ship.
The PRC chairman also added that "Since it is designed for direct beach landings and to operate and land cargo and passengers on unimproved areas and damaged ports and wharfs, we won’t have to go through what we have experienced during Yolanda again,” Gordon said.
