Although we have the present law that would penalized such individuals, Senator Loren Legarda said that it's not comparable to the injury or damage caused to the victim.

To safeguard the dignity of every citizen, incriminatory machinations or being a 'chismosa/chismoso' are penalized under Article 364 or "Intriguing Against Honor" of the Revised Penal Code.

Intriguing Against Honor is also known as gossip or "tsismis". The offender does not really want to assume responsibility for the statement but imputes it to another from whom he learned the statement.

The amendment of the bill increased the offender's penalty from P 200 to P 50,000. Furthermore, the offender may serve 6 months and 1 day to 12 years in prison once proven guilty.
“Whether it is the simple deed of spreading intrigues against a person, or the more serious act of implicating someone in a crime that he has not committed, incriminatory machinations blemish an individual’s character and may eventually ruin a person’s life,” Sen. Legarda said.

Where the source of the information can be pinpointed and definitely determined, and the person, adopting as his own the information he has obtained, passes the same to another for the purpose of causing dishonor to complainant’s reputation. is also known as gossip or tsismis.
