CHR Ayaw Imbestigahan Ang Pagpatay Kay Espinosa Dahil Walang EJK Ang Nangyari

The Supreme Court of the Philippines ordered for the conduct of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the issuance of a search warrant that led to the death of Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. and his fellow inmate inside the Baybay City Jail, before dawn of Saturday.

The search warrant was directed to a team of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) of the Philippine National Police (PNP), and issued to the local chief executive, who allegedly engaged into a shootout in the course of resistance against the policemen.

Apat from Mayor Espinosa, a detainee in an adjacent cell, Raul Yap, was also killed in the shootout.

Supreme Court Information Chief Atty. Theodore Te said in a press conference on Tuesday afternoon that the details on the probe are still being worked out by the high court.

Aside from the Supreme Court and the PNP, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is also carrying out a parallel investigation on the case.

According to Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II, the parallel investigation of directed toward avoiding any suspicion of whitewash.

Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, who is a former chief of the PNP, previously said that the killing of Mayor Espinosa raised several questions toward the PNP and also the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG).

Mayor Espinosa was tagged by President Rodrigo Duterte in the illegal drug trade in the Visayas area, where his son, Rolando Jr. alias Kerwin, was considered as the bigtime druglord until he was arrested in Abu Dhabi in United Arab Emirates.
