U.S. Senator Stops Sale Of Police Firearms To The Philippines Because Of Extrajudicial Killings
The U.S. State Department stopped the planned sale of about 26,000 assault rifles to the Philippine National Police (PNP) as the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Sen. Ben Cardin, said that he would oppose it due concerns regarding human rights violations in the country.
Cardin said that these concerns gave him second thoughts about arming the Philippines’ police force.
Lately, President Rodrigo Duterte’s reaction about the United States’ comments on the administration’s bloody battle against illegal drugs complicated the relationship between the two allied countries.
Since June 30 of this year, over 2,300 people were killed in police operations or by suspected vigilantes under President Duterte’s anti-narcotics campaign which was opposed by some international organizations.

The U.S. State Department was informed by the Foreign Relations Committee staff that Sen. Cardin will oppose their deal to sell 26,000 – 27,000 assault rifles to the PNP during the department’s pre-notification process on the sale of police firearms. State Department officials have yet to comment about this.
