President Rodrigo Duterte only has himself to blame for the unease he’s causing among the public over his statements on Martial Law, the camp of Vice President Leni Robredo said.

In a statement released Thursday (Dec. 29), Robredo’s spokesperson, Georgina Hernandez, said the Vice President did not intend to make it appear that Duterte was going to declare Martial Law with the comments she has made on the issue.

“President Duterte did that himself. Every time President Duterte has been called out on his comments, it is either dismissed as a joke or said to be taken out of context,” Hernandez said.

Just before Dec. 25, Robredo slammed Duterte’s plan to amend the 1987 Constitution to to allow the declaration of Martial Law without seeking the approval of Congress and the Supreme Court as “the worst Christmas gift to the Filipino people.”

In defense of Robredo’s remarks, Hernandez said the threat of Martial Law and the desire for a one-man rule “can never be a laughing matter.” “Nor can the threat be exaggerated,” she added.

Hernandez said Robredo’s statement on Martial Law only shows Filipinos will remain steadfast in defending their freedom and rights. “We will never allow Martial Law to happen again. The sooner this message sinks in, the better for all,” she said.
