President Rodrigo Duterte is set to be interviewed today Dec 29,Thursday from four major news outlets.

December 29, Thursday, will be D-day for Philippine and foreign media— quite literally— as President Rodrigo Duterte is set to be interviewed individually by prominent broadcasters from four major news outlets. Duterte will be speaking to CNN Philippines’ Pinky Webb in the afternoon, followed by a one-on-one with ABS-CBN chief of reporters and veteran journalist Lynda Jumilla in the afternoon.

The President also has scheduled interviews with Rappler’s Maria Ressa and GMA Network’s Jessica Soho although no time has been announced for these events. Duterte will be wrapping up his one-day media blitz with an exclusive interview with TV5. All interviews are expected to be conducted and aired live by each of the media outfits. Duterte’s decision to grant interviews with local media outlets in a single day is unprecedented considering he has had a love-hate relationship with the press even before he assumed office.

After winning the presidential race last May, Duterte remarked that many of the slain journalists were corrupt. His comment prompted the international media watchdog group Reporters Without Borders to ask reporters to stop covering him. Acting on the group’s statement, Duterte’s camp said he would no longer hold press briefings and would instead course his statements and announcements through state-owned People’s Television Network (PTV-4).

After he became President, however, Duterte warmed up to the press and sometimes gave journalists the chance to ask him questions during official engagements. He said he also does not mind being criticized by the media because it is their right to call him out whenever he does something wrong.
