Duterte: "Better to be a slave than a drug addict"

For President Rodrigo Duterte, addiction to drugs is a fate worse than slavery.

In a speech at the oathtaking of new Philippine National Police officials Thursday (Jan. 19), Duterte said he pitied drug addicts because they are enslaved by a chemical substance.

“Actually ang kawawa nito is they are slaves. Mabuti pa ang slave, kasi kung mabili mo sa African market, magamit mo pa sa trabaho mo,” he said.

“Ito, they are slaves eternally to a chemical sponsored bu a criminal, his pockets full of money at the expense of the Filipino,” the President added.

Duterte said the influence of illegal drugs on a person pains him, especially if the addict is being supported by a relative who’s working abroad.

By the estimates of human rights groups, more than 6,000 people have died in the course of the administration’s brutal crackdown on illegal drugs. Police, however, said not all casualties can be attributed to the war against narcotics.
