Magkakampi pa rin sana: Robredo hopes Duterte won’t cut ties with US in bid to get close to China, Russia

Vice President Leni Robredo sees nothing wrong with President Rodrigo Duterte’s desire to forge closer ties with China and Russia— as long as he does not server the country’s alliance with the United States.

In a press conference in Iloilo City Saturday (Jan. 7), Robredo expressed hope that Duterte will just keep on adding allies with his pivot to China and Russia.

“Ang akin kasi tingin ko iyong makakabuti sa bansa natin na mag-cultivate ng friendship with other countries aside from US. Tingin ko para iyon sa ating lahat na sinusubukan nating dagdagan ang mga kaibigan ng Pilipinas,” she said.

“Ako, wala akong problema for us to maintain close relations with China adn Russia, pero sana not at the expense of parang severing our ties with other allies,” Robredo added.

Duterte has repeatedly announced his plan to forge closer ties with China and Russia, the US’ traditional rivals for power, while slamming Washington for supposedly meddling in Philippine affairs.

On Friday (Jan. 6), the President expressed hopes that Moscow would become the Philippines’ ally and protector during his tour of a Russian warships docked in Manila.
